What Is PDF Metadata and How to Remove It

Every PDF carries information that is not visible on the page. Before you publish or send a document, it is worth knowing what it says about you.

What metadata can contain

Typical fields include title, author, subject, keywords, the software that created the file and the creation and modification dates. Company names and usernames sometimes appear in these fields.

Check it first

Open PDF Metadata Viewer to see exactly what is stored. It runs locally, so you can inspect confidential files safely.

Clean it with one click

Remove PDF Metadata clears the descriptive fields and leaves the visible content untouched. Do this before posting documents publicly or submitting work anonymously.

What it does not remove

Text and images on the pages themselves, such as a name in a header or a photo with identifying details, are not metadata. Review the content separately.
